Instructions for Authors

• Manuscripts submitted to JJVAS should be written in Japanese or English and should contribute to the advancement of clinical and research aspects of veterinary anesthesia and surgery. The content of submitted manuscripts should not have been previously published elsewhere or be under consideration for publication elsewhere.
• The first author and corresponding author of submitted manuscripts, excluding invited manuscripts, must be members of the Japanese Society of Veterinary Anesthesia and Surgery.
• The acceptance or rejection of submitted manuscripts will be determined by the editorial board after peer review by at least two referees, and they will generally be published in the order of completion of the review process.
• Manuscripts should be categorized as follows:
  • Review Articles: Comprehensive reviews of recent research in both domestic and international veterinary anesthesia and surgery, or theoretical and technical knowledge related to animal anesthesia and surgery. These articles should be as explanatory as possible.
  • Original Articles: Basic research and clinical studies related to animal anesthesia and surgery, including case reports, that have not been published in other journals.
  • Brief Notes: Brief reports containing new findings related to animal anesthesia and surgery, such as case reports.
  • Letters: Primarily experiential articles related to anesthesia and surgery.
  • Technical Insights: Manuscripts invited by the editorial board. Articles that explain techniques or theoretical knowledge related to veterinary anesthesia and surgery in an easily understandable manner.
  • Special Contributions: Manuscripts invited by the editorial board. These include introductions to the new drugs and equipment related to anesthesia and surgery, descriptions of surgical procedures, symposium reports, as well as introductions to new topics and prospects in anesthesia and surgery.
• The length of the manuscript, including figures and tables, should generally be 8 pages for original articles, 6 pages for brief notes, and 2 pages for letters in the final printed format.
• Manuscripts should be prepared using word processing software such as Microsoft Word, in A4 format with 30 to 35 characters per line and 25 to 28 lines per page, with 30mm margins on all sides. Page numbers should be placed in the center at the bottom of each page, and line numbers should be placed on the left side throughout the document. The manuscript should be saved as a Word file and submitted according to the instructions on the online submission form.
• On the first page of the manuscript, indicate the submission category (e.g., original article, brief note) and follow with the title, author names, and the addresses of the author's affiliations, including postal codes. Additionally, provide the contact information of the corresponding author, including their name, address, telephone number, fax number, and e-mail address.
  On the second page, include an summary (approximately 200 words for original articles, approximately 100 words for brief notes) and keywords (up to 5 words for original articles, up to 3 words for brief notes).
  Starting from the third page onwards, for original articles, follow the sequence of Introduction, Materials and Methods, Results, Discussion, Acknowledgments, Disclosure of Conflicts of Interest, References, and Figure/Table captions (number, title, description). For reviews, brief notes, letters, technical Insights, and special contributions, the first and second pages should generally follow the same format as original articles, but from the third page onwards, adherence to this specific format is not obligatory.
• For manuscripts on research involving animals or animal-derived samples, authors must indicate that the research was conducted following the guidelines established by their affiliations and provide the approval number from their institution's animal experiment committee or equivalent.
• Foreign names, place names, and other terms should be retained in their original spelling. Scientific names of plants and animals should be in italics with underlines.
• Abbreviations should not be used in the title. When abbreviations are used for the first time in the summary and within the main text, the full term should be presented first, followed by the abbreviation in parentheses.
• For supplies such as drugs or materials, in the initial mention, include the generic name followed by the product name, company name, city, and country in parentheses. For U.S. companies, also include the state abbreviation after the city name.
• When citing copyrighted figures or materials, authors must obtain permission for reproduction from the copyright holder.
• Figures and tables should be created separately from the main text and saved in the following file formats. File names should clearly indicate the figure or table number. Figures should be saved in formats with broad compatibility such as JPEG, TIFF, or PDF (at a resolution of 300dpi or higher), while tables should be created in Excel. In the main text, specify the insertion location of figures and tables in the right margin of the page. Submit the figure and table files following the instructions on the submission form with the main manuscript files.
• Use the following units of measurement: M, mM, μM, N, %, m, cm, mm, μm, nm, pm, cm², l, ml, μl, kg, g, mg, μg, ng, pg, hr, min, sec, msec, rpm, H₂, Ci, mCi, cpm, dpm, ppm, ℃, cal, kcal, lux, CPE, LD, etc. When using special symbols, provide a brief explanation.
• Citation format should follow the Vancouver style as a general rule. Arrange the reference list in the order of the first authors cited in the text and assign numbers. In the main text, use superscript numbers to indicate the reference list numbers (e.g., Yamada 1), Yamada 1,3,5,10), Yamada 1-3)). List the references as per the example below. If there are fewer than 6 authors, list all their names; if there are more than 6 authors, list only the first 3 followed by et al.

  For journals

• Manuscripts that have received revision instructions are generally required to submit the revised version within 2 months from the date of the revision instructions. If more time is needed due to special circumstances, please notify Society Office by email or other means.
• Author corrections are limited to the initial draft, and additional revisions are not allowed during this stage. Proofreading should be completed and returned within 2 days of receipt. If the deadline is missed, corrections by the editorial committee may be considered final.
• If English language editing is deemed necessary by the editorial board, the authors will be responsible for covering any associated fees.
• Copyright for papers published in this journal belongs to the Japanese Society of Veterinary Anesthesia and Surgery.
• There are no publication fees for articles.
